In 2016, Shinya and I sent our new album with Julia Kent, "Total Fiction," to filmmaker Paul Clipson and asked him if he'd like to make a music video for one of the tracks. After an initial resounding "yes!" and a few idealistic exchanges, the conversation somehow escalated to "when are we going to do the full album live with a full-length film?" Paul started putting together a 50-minute edit of new film variations and older works blended seamlessly and inspired by the album. With Shinya in Japan, Paul in California and myself in Montreal, it felt logical to meet up in Europe to perform it. So, in March and April of 2017, Total Fiction became a live music performance inspired by a film inspired by an album.

Perhaps the most mysterious and hilarious thing that happened on the road, was when Paul missed the train to Brussels, and we had no contact with him at all. Not having met up before our train was boarding, or knowing anything about Paul's whereabouts whatsoever, Shinya and I had no choice but to board the train and hope that he was either on his way already or not lost and broke somewhere. When we arrived at the station he wasn't there so we waited, then taxied to the venue, not there either, so we accepted that this gig would have to be done without him. An hour before doors, in walks Paul with a comforting smile on his face, slightly dishevelled; "boy do I have a story for you guys!" And the show went on as planned and ended up being one of our favorite sets of the tour.

So we've decided to release the music from Brussels as a memorial to Paul. There's a bit of a melancholy air to the music for sure, but its slowness and patient pace absolutely capture the way one is ultimately forced to sit back and reflect on the luminescence of all things when witnessing one of Paul Clipson's films. We improvised through some loosely composed material every night, and the way the film lit up the room, the energy and anticipation of every space, the deep warm of the bass and the tingly resonating reverberations, all contributed to making each night something entirely different.

The Total Fiction tour, as well as the years of correspondence with Paul and planning before, and the ad hoc moments of communication and catching up that followed, both in Oakland and via many emails, changed my life forever. I'll never forget those memories and Paul will be missed by myself and Shinya for the rest of our lives.
