about

chantsbeneath.net

The Chants Beneath Project is a living archive of newly commissioned sound works for 120 international sonic artists, each based on a unique single edition doublesided cassette-tape loop cut from Jeremy Young's 50-minute piece entitled, "Chants Beneath The Bed Of The Furnace Brook". These works are not for sale (except should the artists choose to release them) but will forever be freely available for listening.

Here, I will upload sets of 12 new tracks once a month, starting in October 2015. The sets will be presented thematically via a podcast called The Chants Beneath Project which launches on the 20th of every month between October 2015 and July 2016. When the podcast is launched, the tracks that debut in that program will be published here and via the chantsbeneath.net archive.

Wave Farm is a Media Partner and WGXC 90.7 FM in New York's Upper Hudson Valley will present each podcast program on the air and digitally via their website, wavefarm.org/wgxc

This project seeks to explore diverse applications for commissioning new sonic work, with a focus on making rare and experimental audio art available to hear at the lowest possible cost (free) for the greatest number of listeners (online). In designing this project I was hoping to create a simple, playful and open-ended platform for collaboration, with the only parameter for the artist being that their tape loop needed to be used in some way (or reimagined). In essence, the fee for commissioning every new work was a single artist's edition copy of the cassette tape loop itself, the only one in existence, alongside 124 other different loops cut from the same piece. There is no album, or record, and no distribution, this collection exists only here.

Enjoy your swim!
